The Performing Arts Department at Eastern Connecticut State University is very proud to present Lulu. Lulu is a contemporary opera inspired by the tragic masterpiece Earth Spirit by Frank Wedekind (Spring Awakening) and developed by director/librettist Bob McGrath, composer/librettist Joseph Budenholzer, and performer/librettist Maluca Mala (Natalie Ann Yepez), in partnership with Eastern Connecticut State University. Lulu will feature the talents of Maluca Mala, Jennifer Charles (Elysian Fields, Ridge Theater), John Dossett (Broadway, Ridge Theater) and Jordan Goldston for the first time on Eastern's Proscenium Stage, side-by-side with Eastern students and faculty. The opera tells the story of Lulu, a homeless child living in fin de siècle Vienna. She is groomed by a predatory father figure and as a result of her childhood trauma, grows up to become a seducer and predator who rips through the lives of all who love her, like a perfect storm of despair and death. The musical palate is an eclectic fusion of rap, Kurt Weill, and art rock. Lulu is presented in special partnership with Ridge Theater and is part of the newly launched Artist-in-Residency Initiative, a program that invites artists from around the world to share their knowledge with our students, use our world-class facilities, collaborate with faculty, and inspire our audiences with challenging new works.
