Let Them Eat Cake! Chocolate Cake Baking Contest

A chocolate-fueled tradition is celebrating its Sweet 16 in Romantic Willimantic this February.

Home bakers of all ages and abilities are invited to whip up their tastiest chocolate delights for the 16th annual "Let Them Eat Cake" chocolate cake baking contest on Saturday, Feb. 8, in conjunction with the Romantic Willimantic Chocolate Festival.

This sweet event will once again take place at the Kerri Gallery on Main Street in Willimantic, where the cake entries will all be displayed for the public to check out, size up and bid on, as the cakes will be auctioned off.

That's also where the trio of judges, all local professional bakers, will be weighing in on the cakes and awarding prizes in four categories: star baker (general/adult), best kid baker (children 12 and under), top teen baker (ages 13-18)  and best Willimantic-themed confection.

This year's judges are returnees Robert Landolphi from University of Connecticut Dining Services, a gluten-free baking expert and Johnson & Wales grad, and Eric Merkle, UConn's bakery manager. They will be joined by newcomer Hannah Roda-McNaboe, of Willington, another Johnson & Wales graduate who runs her own baking business, The Pastryarchy.

Cakes must be dropped off to the Kerri Gallery, 861 Main St., Willimantic, between 9 and 10 a.m. Feb. 8. Please include a list of ingredients used. Preregistration is $5 and runs up until Feb. 7. Day-of/walk-in participants are welcome too, for a $10 entry fee. Fees go toward prizes and seed next year’s competition.

Checks should be made out to "Willimantic Renaissance" and sent to:

Let Them Eat Cake

32 Mansfield Hollow Road Ext.

Mansfield Center, CT 06250

Please write “cake contest” on the bottom of your check. Include your name, address, phone number and category you want to enter.

Cakes will be available for auction after noon, and must be picked up by the winning bidders by 2:30 p.m. Starting bids are $10 and go up from there. An announcement of this year's cake contest winners will be at 2 p.m. at the gallery.
