The Connecticut Eastern Railroad Museum is located off Bridge Street in downtown Willimantic, Connecticut, on the original site of the Columbia Junction Freight Yard. Our collection includes locomotives and rolling stock, as well as vintage railroad buildings and a six-stall roundhouse reconstructed on the original foundation.

EASTCONN’s Arts at the Capitol Theater (ACT)

ACT arts magnet high school offers CT students 5 fields of study: acting, dance, theater production, audio/video & creative writing. ACT’s curriculum integrates performing arts with traditional academics. Students participate in performances and can earn free college credits. ACT includes 2 theaters, audio/video editing suites, dance studios, a costume and set shop & more. EASTCONN is a public, non-profit, Regional Educational Service Center.

The Willimantic Footbridge

The Willimantic Footbridge was erected in 1906. It cost $12,000.00 to build, a lot of money in 1906. The 635 foot long Willimantic Footbridge is the only structure east of the Mississippi River to span a highway, railroad tracks, and a river (the Willimantic River). In 1978 the footbridge was placed on the National Register of Historical Places.

Thread City Crossing

One of the more intentionally unusual structures in Connecticut is The Frog Bridge of Willimantic, also known as the Thread City Crossing.

Spanning the Willimantic River, the nearly 500-foot bridge was completed in 2000 at a cost of $13 million and connects routes 66 and 32, and would be fairly unremarkable if not for the four 11-foot frogs sitting atop giant spools of thread. -Text courtesy of DamnedCT.com

Willimantic Whitewater Partnership

The Willimantic Whitewater Partnership's mission is to reclaim the Willimantic River by transforming its property on Bridge Street into the hub of a linear park system that will incorporate rivers, parks, and trails. They plan to make the property into an urban park and a gateway to downtown Willimantic.

Windham Historical Society

Additional Info:

The Windham Historical Society is located in the Jillson House which was the home of William Jillson. The house was built from stones quarried out of the Willimantic River in 1825. In 1851 the Willimantic Linen Company bought the mills and the house. The building was them sold and converted into apartments. It was vacant for many years and fell into decay. In the late 1960s Dr. Braw Rafferty headed the project of restoration. In 1976 it was bought by the Historical Society.

The Windham Textile and History Museum (The Mill Museum), located in the historic former headquarters of the American Thread Company of Willimantic, Connecticut, is a non-profit educational institution housing a museum, a library, and an archive. Through its exhibits, programs, and collections, the museum preserves and interprets the history of textiles, textile arts and the textile industry, with special emphasis on the experiences of the craftspeople, industrial workers, manufacturers, inventors, designers, and consumers.
