Thread City Development is a partnership of business, industry, government, and education representatives, as well as property owners and community driven volunteers who are committed to revitalize and manage Willimantic’s downtown utilizing the Main Street Four-Point Approach® as established by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
Thread City Development was formed in 2004 as an outgrowth of the Town of Windham's Economic Development Committee. The volunteer-driven organization is comprised of a fifteen-member board and a broad-based membership representative of five classes: Business, Education, Government, Community organizations and at-large.
Since the organization’s inception we have executed activities including several public forums that resulted in the creation of a Downtown Strategic Plan; developed and piloted a façade improvement program that leveraged private investment with public grant funds; produced marketing materials for the downtown district tailored to the college aged demographic for nearby Eastern Connecticut State University and the University of Connecticut; using tax credits, oversaw the design and construction of a public butterfly garden in our town square; piloted a community public art program; produced seasonal event brochures; and lent in-kind support to numerous community partners by leveraging our assets for collaborative planning grants.
Most recently, Thread City Development has begun producing seasonal downtown event brochures to highlight business and tourism promotions throughout the downtown and Willimantic. In the summer of 2012, TCD teamed up with the Victorian Neighborhood Association to cross promote their annual home tour in conjunction with various events and specials offered by downtown businesses throughout the summer.
In November of 2012, Thread City Development launched WillimanticDowntown.org to promote and brand the downtown area as a unified eat, see, do destination. Major support for the web development was made possible through a 2012 Preservation of Place Grant.
